Our Program: Dance Works’ program provides an opportunity for the lower-income and disadvantaged families of our community to participate in the art of dance. Accredited, quality training in the artistic aspects and fundamentals of dance is simply not otherwise available at an affordable cost in Memphis. Dance Works fills this need, and also assists children who are interested in dance as a career. The program consists of nine months of yearly lessons for children ages 4 and up, and a 4-week summer program for children ages 7 & up. It emphasizes classical ballet as the foundation, which in turn serves as a springboard to introduce other dance forms such as creative dance, modern, jazz, and ethnic dance. The syllabus used for the ballet classes is certified and regulated by the Royal Academy of Dance, an international accredited organization. Dance Works has been teaching children from all over the Greater Memphis Area since 1987 with the scholarship support from ArtsMemphis and teacher/guest artist residencies from the Tennessee Arts Commission. Enthusiastic letters of support from parents have aided us in continuing that funding. | |||

Participation in the scholarship program is limited to lower income families on the Memphis City Schools’ Free Lunch program, in keeping with the program's objective. In 1993, Dance Works moved to Southwest Tennessee Community College's Union/downtown campus in the Fine Arts, Languages & Literature Department. Dance Works is also included in the Board of Education Kid’s Express/21st Century Program through its Community Outreach Program, which enables Dance Works to collaborate with after schools programs. Enrollment is expected to continue to grow as more families take advantage of the opportunity Dance Works offers. |
